In 1999, our Board of Directors made a bold endorsement of the value of working in a renovated, beautiful old building in the heart of downtown, by voting to move the Foundation's offices to the historic Hotel Cortez, a 10-story building located on the northeast corner of Mesa Street and Mills Avenue , across from San Jacinto Plaza .
Once known as “A Castle of Old Spain on the Plaza of El Paso ,”
the Hotel Cortez opened its doors on September 10, 1926 . Renowned architect Henry C. Trost designed the building as an elaborate example of Spanish Colonial Revival style.
Throughout the years, this majestic hotel has been the site of many civic and social events for El Pasoans, including a magnificent Presidential Dinner held for President John F. Kennedy in June, 1963.
Today, the tenth floor of this historic building is the home of the El Paso Community Foundation. Having been lovingly restored by local artisans, the highlight of their efforts is the “Old City Club
”
, originally a beautifully decorated private club. Now fully restored, it serves as a community center for non-profits to hold meetings, conferences and workshops.
